Abstract | Honduras is the most important cultivated shrimp producer among the Isthmus Central American countries, with a total production volume of 12,000 MT from an area of 14,000 ha during 1998. The shrimp industry observed the drop in production levels in 1994 and 1995, due to the presence of the Taura virus (TSV). Even though production levels partially recovered in 1997 and 1998, the introduction of the White Spot virus (WSSV) in the first months of 1999. resulted in a further decline in the production capacity of the farms. |
