Responsibilities:

  • Managing all activities centered around the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) protocol(s) for the laboratory.  Writing and submitting three-year and annual renewals, as well as periodic amendments to the protocol as dictated by the research goals and projects of the laboratory.  Training and adding staff to the protocol.  Maintaining training records and occupational health clearances for laboratory staff.
  • Managing the financial aspects of the laboratory as they relate to its fish research program.  Developing and maintaining operating budgets. Ordering supplies and liaising with vendors/suppliers. Participating in quarterly laboratory finance meetings.
  • Overseeing the exchange of resources related to the laboratory’s fish program, both within and outside the BCH research community.  Protecting BCH intellectual property during interactions with collaborators by helping to execute necessary material transfer agreements and shipping requests. Preparing documentation required for international transport of fish; including customs declaration forms and health certificates.
  • Coordinating the activities of laboratory technicians, graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows in the zebrafish facilities, ensuring that standard operating procedures are followed, and laboratory facilities are effectively utilized.  
  • Operating, maintaining and troubleshooting sophisticated recirculating aquaculture systems, as well as aquatics tank washers, feeding robots, and integrated electronic water quality monitoring systems, all observing standard operating procedures and safety guidelines. Coordinating service to units, if required.
  • Troubleshooting animal health and welfare issues and communicating them to ARP Manager.
  • Performing various husbandry tasks, including spawning, in-vitro fertilization, and numerous other procedures that involve the handing of fish.  

Qualifications:

 

  • The analytical skills to resolve highly complex problems requiring the application of scientific or technical principles.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to interface effectively with scientific staff.
  • The knowledge of theories, principles, and concepts acquired through completion of a Bachelor's degree in Biology or a closely related field and 4 years of experience. Academic training in fish biology, aquaculture, or aquatic ecology is highly preferred.
