Integrated Statistics is looking for a Biological Laboratory Technician to work in support of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) located in Sandy Hook, NJ.

This position provides assistance in the planning, implementation, and execution of laboratory-based experiments with live marine fish. The technician will work with a group of NOAA laboratory staff on an experimental, hypothesis-testing project on optimizing production of finfish aquaculture. The technician will assist NOAA researchers in laboratory experiments to identify rearing and environmental conditions that maximize production and efficiency of finfish aquaculture.

Responsibilities:

  • Assisting in setting up equipment for seawater laboratory studies.
  • Feeding and husbandry of fish used as test subjects in project experiment(s).
  • Collecting and processing of fish samples.
  • Recording and organizing data collected.
  • Preparing tables, graphs, and summary reports.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability to do physical work in indoor/outdoor spaces and possibly on a sea-going vessel.
  • Valid, clean driver’s license.
  • Availability to work weekends and/or shift schedules.
  • Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, aquaculture, or a related biological field.
  • Ability to work with live specimens in a high humidityenvironment (seawater laboratory).
  • Meticulous record-keeping and organizational skills.
  • Experience using common software applications (e.g. Word, Access, Excel, web browsers, etc.).
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Maximum Qualifications:

  • Experience in and understanding of the design of experiments with live aquatic animals.
  • Ability to enter, organize, summarize, and document data collection; to perform analytical and elementary statistical software on collected data, deduce results, and communicate research findings.
  • Skilled in organizing, tracking, and documenting research activities; support tasks (supply needs and expenditures); and assisting NOAA personnel in a multi-tasking environment.
  • Understanding of the importance for fisheries of aquaculture.
  • Familiarity with flow-through or recirculating aquatic systems.
  • Experience with spawning, husbandry, and general maintenance of marine fish/shellfish adults, early life-stages, and live prey in a captive, culture-based environment.
  • Familiarity with methods for evaluating effects in embryos, larvae, and young juveniles to environmental factor manipulations (e.g., temperature, salinity, CO2, dissolved oxygen) and response variable protocols (image data collection, live animal handling and preservation) for research studies of marine and estuarine fish species.
