The Biologist position will support a collaboration between NOAA and The Nature Conservancy to guide aquaculture development through proactive siting and spatial planning to improve ecosystem health. The successful applicant will conduct a global assessment of the potential for commercial shellfish and seaweed aquaculture to restore coastal ecosystems health (e.g. mitigate eutrophication and create habitat) around the world.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct literature reviews and analyze global datasets to understand the environmental, economic, and social parameters that result in ecologically beneficially commercial aquaculture.
  • Utilizing the best scientific information, identify locations for ecologically beneficial aquaculture.
  • Develop ArcGIS maps and other tools to communicate findings.
  • Organize and input data into a database, maintain accurate detailed records of observations, measurements and results.
  • Write peer review journal articles and public
  • Set and meet deadlines for completion of work in timely manner.
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment and contribute to other relevant projects as directed.
  • Other duties that further NOAA and The Nature Conservancy’s aquaculture objectives as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • 5 years related experience and Master’s degree required. PhD preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting a major research effort with a high level of independence
  • Experience writing peer-reviewed scientific journal articles and technical reports
  • Experience working with or knowledge of large environmental datasets
  • Proficient in ArcGIS and standard statistical methods for biological sciences.
  • Experience with searching and creating bibliographic databases such as ProCite or Endnote (or other).
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including demonstrated experience presenting to/ leading discussions with leading science experts.
  • Ability to be flexible in responding to changes in schedules and job priorities.
  • Able to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to follow safety standards and conduct work in an environmentally conscientious manner.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some long days and infrequently on weekends.
  • A valid US driver’s license.
  • Ability to be flexible in responding to changes in schedules and job priorities.
