As part of the Rhode Island Ocean and Coastal Conservation Team, the Science Technician will assist in the field with ongoing coastal monitoring and restoration projects.

This position will be responsible for field and laboratory work and data collection. Field work for this project is often weather dependent and thus requires a flexible schedule and often may require early start times and long days. Occasionally work in inclement weather, weekends and evenings will be required. This full time positions starts May 1, 2017 and end October 27, 2017.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist program supervisor with laboratory and field work.
  • Develop project databases, manage and edit large data files.
  • Complete project reports.
  • May purchase equipment and supplies as provided for in budget.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree in natural resources; environmental studies or equivalent combination of education and 6 months’ experience.
  • Experience managing and prioritizing tasks from multiple sources.
  • Must be able to operate and trailer a 16 foot Carolina Skiff and 21 foot Parker.

Maximum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred or higher in science-related field.
  • 6 months to 1 year of field experience.
  • Driver’s license.
  • Habitat and natural resource survey techniques.
  • Collection and taxonomic identification of finfish and invertebrates.
  • Working in coastal habitats including saltmarshes and oyster reefs.
  • Knowledge of the Providence River, Ninigret Pond and Quonnie Pond.
  • Habitat restoration and creation practices.
  • Data collection, entry, and management.
  • Completing tasks independently within assigned timeframes.
