Integrated Statistics is looking for an Economist to work with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS). The Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) Social Sciences Branch conducts research relating to economic and socio-cultural factors of fisheries management. 

Responsibilities:

  • Provide data processing, research, and analysis in support of a project examining policy instruments that are designed to mitigate the mortality of right whales from commercial fisheries in the US and Canada.
  • Assist on a project related to assessing measures to reduce sea turtle bycatch.
  • Assembling, organizing and cleaning of existing NMFS data (e.g. observer, fishing, and biological survey).
  • Analytical support for counterfactual bio-economic analyses of regulatory measures.
  • Documenting the results for internal collaborators (through sharing code) and external parties (through scholarly writing).

Qualifications:

  • A Master’s Degree or PhD in Economics, or equivalent work experience in economics or a closely related field.
  •  Strong programming skills:
    • Proficiency in either SAS or R (and familiarity with the other)
    • Familiarity with GIS tools for mapping and analysis
    • Familiarity with Oracle or SQL is desirable.
  • Experience working with large data sets, with demonstrated and specific experience in accessing, cleaning, and analyzing data.
  • Familiarity with the implementation of impact evaluation and counterfactual analyses.
  • Experience with theory and estimation of statistical/econometric models, risk analysis, and behavioral models is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of economic issues related to natural resources or the environment.
  • Skill in written communication and preparation of technical and scholarly writing. Writing samples may be requested.
  • Ability to work independently in support of a team goal.
