Responsibilities: As an intern at the SJ hatchery, the successful candidate will be an valuable addition to our SSSC team. During work hours here the candidate will be helping out with basic fish culture tasks, learning about southeast Alaska’s fisheries and helping to educate visitors and peers that visit us at the Science Center. During the candidate's time in Sitka they will gain hands on experience doing a variety of tasks involved with salmon aquaculture which will include saltwater chum and pink incubation and rearing, cost recovery, Freshwater fish culture, maintenance related tasks and educational opportunities. The position will begin in early February, 2018 and the duration is flexible based on the needs of the candidate, but there is potential to stay on until mid December. Airfare to and from Sitka will be provided by SSSC. While housing is not provided, SSSC will do what they can to assist the candidate in their search. Sitka is an incredible community with a rich arts and cultural scene that has outdoor opportunities on the water beaches, trails and mountains that are some of the best in the world! Not to mention, the successful candidate will be a part of a group of like minded people that are building on Sitka's legacy and potential as an educational and scientific community. The successful candidate will be supervised by the Aquaculture Director.

Qualifications:

  • Education and/or experience in fisheries biology, aquaculture, wildlife management, or animal husbandry is preferred, however a positive attitude, willingness to learn and a genuine desire to learn about fisheries and aquaculture in Alaska will go a long way.
