The hatchery technician is responsible for the daily maintenance of the hatchery/nursery; including, but not limited to: broodstock, larval, seed production and microalgae duties. These duties include stock management through all phases, tank cleaning, tank filling, moving hoses, operating pumps, handling disinfectant chemicals and fertilizers, performing algae inoculations, etc.
Large-scale microalgae cultivation and maintenance.
Proper tank/equipment cleaning, preparation and storing.
Brood stock cleaning, feeding, maintenance.
Larval feeding and maintenance.
General data collection and laboratory record taking.
Collecting samples and performing stock assessments. Algae, larval, and seed count cell counting
Handling disinfectant chemicals and fertilizers.
Bivalve seed size grading
Monitor the overall health of the hatchery/nursery.
Working on slippery and uneven terrain (steps, decking, plumbing, etc.)
The AquaFish Innovation Lab provided support for and participated in a workshop in 2018 to formalize and develop structure for the Aquaculture Network of East Africa
