Three PhD Scholarships in Mycotoxicology

The LEAP-Agri research project MycoSafe-South, the “European–African partnership for safe and efficient use of mycotoxin-mitigation strategies in sub-Saharan Africa", intends to harness the expertise and infrastructure available in Europe by strengthening the capacity of the Southern partners to tackle the mycotoxin problem and the associated food safety issues. This project will identify safe and efficient mitigation strategies to reduce aflatoxins (AFs) and fumonisins (FBs) exposure in Africa, with special focus on children.

PhD Graduate Research Assistantship

Responsibilities: Oklahoma State University is currently seeking a Ph.D. candidate to develop a project to examine sucker population demographics across the landscape of the Ozark Highlands ecoregion. Part of the project will focus on identifying the drivers of spawning habitat use and spawning success, and another aspect will focus on how harvest of these populations relates to changes in demographics. There is sufficient flexibility in how the project is developed.

 

PhD Research Assistantship

Responsibilities: Determine growth, survival, and movement of stocked Striped Bass, and potential impact on existing sportfish in Bull Shoals Reservoir.  Techniques will include telemetry, gill netting, and food web analysis. The student is expected to conduct field work for 1-2 weeks at a time, operate boats, collaborate with state agency biologists, and present/publish their work.  

MS Position in Stream Fish Ecology

Responsibilities:

  • Conducting independent research modeling distributions of South Carolina’s fluvial fishes
  • Assisting SCDNR with ongoing stream/small river sampling
  • Assisting with undergraduate courses

Qualifications:

  • BS in Fisheries Science, Ecology/Evolution/Biology, or equivalent
  • Strong quantitative skills (data analysis)
  • Experience working in aquatic systems with aquatic organisms

PhD Graduate Research Assistantship

Responsibilities: Research will focus on investigating the role of tributaries in supporting large river fish populations and food webs using otolith microchemistry and stable isotope analysis.

Qualifications: M.S. in Fisheries, Aquatic ecology or related field.  Strong written and oral communication and analytical skills.  Experience with otolith microchemistry.  Fish sampling experience in large rivers desirable.  Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
