The Fisheries and Aquaculture Solutions Program represents an exciting rebranding of the former Sustainable Seafood Program at Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life at the New England Aquarium (NEAq). A core program of the Anderson Cabot Center which comprises all research and conservation work at NEAq the Fisheries and Aquaculture Solutions Program aims to improve ocean health by partnering with companies that buy and sell seafood to improve the sustainability of their seafood portfolio, and reduce detrimental impacts on the ocean. NEAq seeks an experienced, energetic, and creative individual to become a part of our team.

The successful candidate will assume project management duties, and will conduct independent technical research (both individually and as part of a team) for sustainable seafood sourcing projects. While the primary focus in this role will involve global commercial and recreational wild fisheries, the position will also help support assignments and deliverables in the aquaculture space.

Responsibilities:

  • Assume project management duties and investigate the status of wild fisheries target species, practices, management and collateral impacts, and produce science-based summary reports, memos, and position statements (when not the primary author, review and edit materials from other program staff). Contribute to similar deliverables in the aquaculture space as needed.
  • Lead programmatic projects that provide input to corporate partners and other organizations also working on sustainable seafood issues.
  • Provide technical expertise on aquaculture and/or wild fisheries improvements.
  • Provide leadership on particular areas of seafood sustainability, such as representation on steering committees, boards and/or technical committees.
  • Assist with management of corporate partner relationships and completion of deliverables.
  • Contact and develop open lines of communication with the seafood business community, commercial fishing industry, scientists, and fishery managers.
  • Manage interns and volunteers for the Fisheries and Aquaculture Solutions Program.
  • Attend and present work at academic and industry conferences/tradeshows.
  • Participate in business development meetings with potential corporate partners by providing technical expertise and translating scientific materials for business audiences.
  • Perform other position-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum Training and Experience

  • A Master's degree is required, in marine biology, fisheries science, marine policy, or equivalent.
  • 5 years of related technical experience.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • A strong working knowledge of global seafood markets, wild fisheries science and management, aquaculture industry/practices, government policies impacting the seafood industry, production and/or capture methods used both domestically and internationally, and the fundamental structure of the seafood supply chain.
  • Familiarity with codes of practice, best management plans, product traceability, seafood certification and ecolabeling, and other seafood initiatives.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in conducting independent research, as well as written and oral communication.
  • Preferred experience in program/impact evaluation using analytics and diverse metrics.
  • Ability to interpret and critically analyze available information and formulate opinions and recommendations.
  • Highly organized, with the ability to multitask, meet deadlines and responsibly manage multiple, simultaneous projects.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work with a diversity of professionals (scientists, fishery managers, seafood industry representatives, fish farmers, and conservationists).
  • Interest and dedication to working both independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be willing to undertake limited travel and work some evenings/weekends.
