Responsibilities:

  • This position will be responsible for managing the Monitoring and Assessment of MPA’s Program and the development of a fish hatchery program.
  • This position will also assist the FS Supervisor in the management and implementation of CNMI DFW-Sportfish Restoration Program.
  • The Senior Fisheries Biologist will assist the FS Supervisor in the planning and implementation of all research activities and management actions for fisheries resources in the CNMI.
  • Directly manages or co-manages secondary FS grants, and assists in the management of other grants.
  • Senior Fisheries Biologist will assist the FS Supervisor to conduct and report on biological assessments, endangered species assessments, and environmental impact assessments.
  • Successful candidate will supervise and/or organize the completion of fisheries monitoring surveys in the CNMI, and will coordinate with other DFW sections, local and federal governmental agencies.
  • Reviews database entry and edit by staff. Participate in data entry and edit where applicable.
  • Under the direction of the FS, participates in the preparation of technical and administrative reports on research findings and provide biological input on management decisions.
  • Will review, comment and may recommend conditions on fishing license/permit applications.
  • Provides the Director with recommendations for the enhancement of FS operational procedures.
  • Serves on Western Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Council (WPRFMC) Plan Teams as appointed. Provides the WPRFMC with data analysis for fisheries resources in the CNMI.
  • Will serve, as appointed by Director, on CNMI committees tasked with the goal of natural resource management.
  • Presents research and management findings at national and international fisheries and marine resource management conferences.
  • Prepares of manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Assists in the planning, development and implementation of FS research and development programs consistent with the requirements and goals of the CNMI Division of Fish and Wildlife.
  • Promotes good working relationships with cooperating agencies and the public.
