Manatee Holdings Ltd is seeking an energetic individual to join the team at its shellfish hatchery near Courtenay, British Columbia (BC). Hatchery operations are focused on commercial production of geoduck and oyster seed as well as research and development of emerging aquaculture species such as sea urchins. The company has pioneered geoduck culture in BC and currently manages an ocean farm in addition to its onshore facility. The successful candidate will work with the hatchery team to meet the ever changing needs of shellfish hatchery production.

Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Hatchery Technician will be involved in all aspects of shellfish production including but not limited to:

  • Culturing algae
  • Conditioning and spawning broodstock
  • Rearing larvae and juveniles
  • Monitoring environmental conditions and water quality
  • Keeping records
  • Cleaning and maintaining equipment and facilities

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience with basic laboratory equipment and computer software is required
  • The ideal candidate must also be physically fit as this is a very active position involving some lifting
  • Excellent organizational, time-management, and problem-solving skills are essential
  • Proficient in English
  • Eligible to work in Canada
  • Have own transportation
  • The Hatchery Technician must be able to work a flexible schedule as some weekend, holiday, and after-hours work will be required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A degree or diploma in marine biology or aquaculture is desired, but consideration will be given to applicants with relevant industry experience. Knowledge of shellfish hatchery protocols and culture systems is an asset.
