Abstract | Although relatively expensive, mechanical aeration increases the amount of aquaculture production possible per unit area. Aerators are rated according to standard aeration efficiency (SAE), an expression of how much oxygen is transferred. Since SAE test conditions are seldom met in culture, actual oxygen-transfer rates are 40 to 60% of the SAE values. Asian-style paddlewheel aerators are widely used but reflect design and operational issues that limit efficiency. Testing has led to more efficient designs that are now widely used in U.S. catfish and shrimp ponds. |
